What's next with Safe Adventures

The way we support student groups to operate safely is changing and we want to facilitate our collective work in this space.

We’ve just launched a new, 9-month programme to do this work and we’re inviting you to join us.

What is Implementing Safe Adventures?

A collective consultancy programme with priorities shaped by participating organisations. We worked with SUs on the first stage that resulted in the Safe Adventures report and it’s important to open up to a wider group for this next stage. It’s open to universities and students’ unions and we’ll work with partners in relevant organisations (NGBs, awarding bodies, technical advisors and consultants, as well as HE focused organisations).

Through the work around the Safe Adventures report we’ve worked with lots of organisations and found there isn’t a natural home with cross-sector, UK-wide collective work on student group safety. Lots of organisations care deeply about this work but have existing strategies and focus areas meaning they can’t be the central place for this work.

We want to work with them, and with universities and students’ unions, to bring them all together to consider how we implement the principles.

Why is this important work to do now?

The Safe Adventures report launched in March 2026 and showed us that supporting organisations can’t be assured that student group activity is safe. This doesn’t mean that activity is actually unsafe in all cases but we didn’t see sufficient checks, questions and processes to be sure.

The Student Group Safety Principles and recommendations help supporting organisations move towards that assurance - they say what to do..

Implementing safe adventures brings together a collective to consider how to do it.

Where should you start with this work?

  1. Read the Safe Adventures report and consider what it means to your organisation

  2. If you’re from a ‘supporting organisation’, review your practice against the principles using this self-evaluation tool.

  3. Join the Implementing Safe Adventures programme by 30th June to shape the collective priorities

We’re looking forward to working on this next phase of work. We know better so let’s do better.
